Selling acid oils in Europe is a two-step commercial story: turn the soapstock into acid oil, and settle what the parent oil means for classification. Acid oil comes from acidulating soapstock -- the gum-and-soap by-product of vegetable oil refining split into free fatty acids and glycerides -- and it prices on total fatty acid content (TFA), with moisture, impurities and the unsaponifiable fraction as discount drivers. The strategic question is the parent oil: the origin material determines how the stream sits under the renewable energy rules, and with palm-linked streams, what the deforestation rules ask (our EUDR page covers that line). The buyer list is broad -- biodiesel and renewable diesel plants hungry for high-FFA feed, oleochemicals running fatty acid chemistry, and limited feed outlets -- and since price reporting agencies launched dedicated soapstock acid oil assessments, the stream trades as a named commodity rather than a refinery afterthought.
- 1Soapstock drawn off in vegetable oil refining
- 2Acidulated into free fatty acids and glycerides
- 3Assayed on TFA, moisture and unsaponifiables
- 4Parent-oil classification settled (EUDR where palm)
- 5Sold to fuel, oleochemistry, or limited feed
Acid oil prices on total fatty acid, and its paperwork story on the parent oil: palm-linked streams carry EUDR duties that identical-looking soy or rapeseed streams do not.
Step 1: from soapstock to sellable acid oil
Soapstock leaves the refinery as a watery, soapy sludge. Acidulation splits it: sulphuric or other acid breaks the soaps into free fatty acids, which separate as the acid oil phase. Done well, it concentrates value; done poorly, it ships water and salts at freight cost.
The analysis that matters: TFA (total fatty acids), moisture, impurities, and unsaponifiables. Buyers quote on TFA and discount on the rest; a dry, clean acid oil at high TFA is a different product from a wet one at the same name.
Esterified acid oil -- the FFA esterified into biodiesel-grade material -- is the upgraded route for refiners with volume; see our esterified acid oils page for that market.
Step 2: the classification conversation
The parent oil decides the paperwork story:
Soybean, sunflower, rapeseed acid oils from European refining: waste-and-residue streams from vegetable oil processing -- the renewable-energy classification follows the stream and the member state's implementation, and the certificate is what converts that into premium.
Palm-linked acid oils (PFAD, palm soapstock streams): in scope of the EUDR as products made directly from a regulated commodity -- geolocation and due diligence statements apply from the 2026 dates. This is the single biggest classification difference between acid oils that look identical in a tank.
Whatever the parent: the ISCC chain (or equivalent) from refinery to buyer is what makes the cargo compliance material. Uncertified acid oil sells -- as feedstock, at feedstock prices.
Step 3: the buyer list and the price
Biodiesel and renewable diesel plants are the volume buyers: high-FFA acid oil suits pre-treatment and esterification routes, and where the classification qualifies, the compliance value follows the certificate. Our who buys acid oils page maps them.
Oleochemicals buy acid oil as fatty-acid feed for soaps, esters and derivatives -- steady demand that balances the fuel side.
Feed outlets take acid oil within purity limits -- a realistic third leg for suitable streams, not a dumping ground for unsuitable ones.
On price: quote and compare on TFA-adjusted value, net of moisture and impurities, with freight and the certificate premium explicit. The classic mistake in this trade is comparing a wet cargo and a dry one on headline tonnage -- the market does not.
Frequently asked questions
How to sell acid oils in Europe?
Know the FFA and the impurities, settle waste-or-product classification, and place the stream with esterification plants, oleochemical houses or renewable-diesel pre-treatment -- volume and consistency decide the door. The route that fits your stream runs below.
Can glycerine pretreat a high-FFA feedstock?
Yes -- that is glycerolysis: free fatty acids plus glycerine become glycerides at roughly 200 °C, without the waste water of acid esterification, and published work runs it on crude glycerine itself. For acid oil sellers that is a second market: the buyer who glycerolyses your FFA needs the glycerine too. Our glycerine grades page maps that pretreatment loop.
Can refineries sell acid oil continuously?
Campaign and continuous refineries both scheduling offtakes, the steady seller contracting monthly, the campaign seller timing the calendar. Chemistry sets the clock, contracts read it.
What is an acid oil price review formula?
Reference-linked repricing with quality adjusters, the term surviving the market's weather, the review being fairness scheduled. Terms need birthdays for prices.
What payment terms are usual for acid oils?
Documentary terms for new relationships, open terms as the analysis history accumulates, the pattern of every feedstock trade. Consistency is credit.
Can I sell acid oils without certification?
Into technical buyers yes, at the discount the compliance market prices in, the two-tier reality of every waste stream. The certificate question is a margin question.
How do I store acid oil correctly?
In corrosion-resistant tanks, warm where winter thickens the stream, water excluded as always, the same trilogy as every fat. The tank decides what the certificate says.
What is the difference between selling soapstock and acid oil?
The chemistry step and the margin, soapstock selling to processors, acid oil selling closer to end use, the decision being whether you or the buyer earns the reaction.
Can acid oil be sold by tender?
Refinery campaigns tender steadily, the auction discipline suiting scheduled production, tenders being acid oil's natural rhythm. Volume meets competition, price discovers itself.
What is the best month to sell acid oil?
The month your tanks are driest, seasonality being secondary to specification, though winter logistics shape heated streams. Sell the analysis, time the freight.
Can I sell acid oil to biodiesel plants directly?
Yes, plants with esterification capacity buy directly, and pretreated sellers command their attention best. The plant gate is a paper threshold before a physical one.
What is the difference between acid oil and fatty acid distillate?
Origin: acid oil from soapstock acidulation in chemical refining, distillates from physical refining's stripping, adjacent analyses from different unit operations. Buyers care, so sellers should too.
How do I handle a rejected acid oil cargo?
Re-sample through the umpire, protect the retention bottle and call a blender, because acid oil's family of buyers always includes an absorber. The rejection is a price event, not an ending.
How do I quote acid oil correctly?
On total fatty matter next to FFA, with the parent oil named and the water and impurities stated, the four line offer that lets a buyer price in one reply. Offers without TFM invite the buyer to assume the worst, and they do.
Should I acidulate soapstock before selling?
Acidulation turns soapstock into acid oil and a discount into a spread, when volume justifies the acid, the equipment and the control. Below that scale, sell soapstock as-is and let the buyer's chemistry earn the margin.
What documents does an acid oil cargo need?
Analysis with TFM and FFA, parent origin records for the Annex IX value, the waste or coproduct status papers, and the scheme chain if claiming compliance. Four documents, one price difference of two markets.
Can I mix acid oils from different refineries?
Physical blending is normal trade, provided the documentation tracks what went in and the blend quotes honestly on the combined analysis. The blend is fine, the vague blend is fraud.
What is the most common acid oil mistake?
Selling on FFA alone, the number everyone quotes, while the buyer prices on TFM, the number everyone pays on. Sellers who learn the difference keep five to ten percent they used to give away.
How do I get more for my acid oil?
Three levers: quote total fatty matter next to FFA so buyers see the real content, document the parent oil origin so the Annex IX value survives, and keep the stream consistent so you sell on specification instead of on story. Each lever is worth real money per tonne, and together they are the difference between the bottom and the top of the range.
Which documents does an acid oil cargo need?
The certificate of analysis with FFA and TFM, the origin documentation for the parent oil, the waste or coproduct status papers where they apply, and the certification chain if the cargo claims compliance value. Buyers contract against the analysis and pay against the rest.
What is acid oil worth?
It prices on total fatty acid content against vegetable oil and fatty acid references, discounted for moisture, impurities and unsaponifiables -- and, where classification and certification allow it, carrying renewable compliance value. Dedicated price assessments for soapstock acid oil now exist, so ask for the TFA-adjusted comparison, not a flat number.
Should I esterify before selling?
Depends on volume and outlet. Esterifying turns FFA into biodiesel-grade material and can lift the price into fuel parity -- but it needs process, certification and scale. Small refinery streams usually sell as acid oil; large ones justify the upgrade. We price both routes for sellers deciding.
Does the EUDR apply to my acid oil?
If the parent oil is a regulated commodity -- palm above all -- then yes: products made directly from it are in scope, with geolocation and due diligence from the 2026 dates. Acid oils from other parents, and genuine waste streams, sit outside. This distinction is on our EUDR page in table form.
Can soapstock be sold as-is?
Usually poorly. Raw soapstock is mostly water and soap; you are paying freight on the refinery's wastewater. Acidulating first concentrates the value into a cargo that prices on TFA. Where acidulation is not feasible, expect aggressive discounts -- the buyer is doing the chemistry you skipped.

On how we work: on the feedstocks and fuels on this site we are a broker. We never take title, we do not trade our own book, and we are paid a commission on business that concludes. Additives are the one exception: those we also buy and sell for our own account, and we say in which capacity we are acting before you commit to anything. Either way you will hear it from us when the answer is no, or when your parcel is not ready for the conversation you want to have. A market read or a second opinion on a specification costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
